This problem is caused by an inflammation of the plantar fascia (a band of tissue/ligament that extends from the heel to the toes) on the bottom of the foot. Several factors contribute to plantar fasciitis including having a very high arched foot or a flat foot, wearing non-supportive footwear on hard surfaces for prolonged periods of time, standing for long hours on your feet and being overweight.
Symptoms include pain on the bottom of the heel that can extend into the arch and sole of the foot. The pain is usually worse upon arising in the morning or after sitting for a period of time. Acupuncture can reduce the pain and inflammation of plantar fascitis and it can restore normal function in the patient’s foot by alleviating the stagnation of chi (energy) and blood in the kidney meridian which traverses the sole of the foot.
